We live in a unique moment in history: in just a few short years, artificial intelligence has progressed from a novelty to a transformative force reshaping the way we work, create, and connect. Global investment in this industry is breaking records, and AI capabilities continue to surge forward every day. 

Our founder, Emad Mostaque, has long believed in using AI to solve some of humanity’s most pressing problems. Since his initial work on the Collective and Augmented Intelligence Against COVID-19 (CAIAC) initiative, he has gained global attention for advocating open source AI development and helping to catalyse initiatives that democratise access to cutting-edge technology. By championing the open release of AI tools—through projects like Stable Diffusion—Emad has shown the potential for harnessing collective intelligence to drive innovation.

Yet, as more of our lives come to rely on AI, the unsettling reality is that only a handful of megacorporations possess the computational power and infrastructure to deliver these technologies at scale. This concentration of power risks stifling innovation, monopolistic control and vulnerability to single points of failure.

Our aims stem from one guiding principle: that AI should be an empowering force for all, not just the privileged few. Having an aligned AI infrastructure that is transparent and participatory is essential to preventing unintended consequences and ensuring that high-level innovations lead to tangible benefits on the ground.

The Distributed Paradigm

It’s tempting to suggest a purely decentralised solution. However, fully decentralised systems often struggle with performance, fragmented resources, and complex governance. Conversely, fully centralised structures can offer efficiency but at the cost of transparency and user autonomy. When technology is mission-critical, we can’t afford to compromise on security, resilience, or scale.

At Intelligent Internet, we propose an innovative balance: a distributed AI ecosystem that fuses the speed and efficiency of centralised infrastructure with the security, transparency, and freedom characteristic of decentralised networks. Rather than leaving users at the mercy of one extreme or the other, we aim to build a system that accommodates both high-powered computation and localised, personalised AI applications.

Over time, we plan to evolve from initial centralised stewardship to an increasingly decentralized model of governance—one that ensures alignment to diverse needs, cultural contexts, and ethical standards. This isn’t merely about building another AI platform. It’s about establishing AI as a universal public good and using technology not as a tool for power concentration, but for collective empowerment and global cooperation.
